Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 Vaccine Ruined

Nearly 15 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 Vaccine have been ruined due to the mix-up at a production facility. On Wednesday, the New York Times newspaper reported delaying future shipments. The workers in a Baltimore, Maryland plant run by Emergent BioSolutions conflated the vaccine ingredients. Federal officials attributed the mistake to “human error.”

The Times said that the problem would not affect the doses that have already been delivered across the U.S. However, this could cause delays of several doses of the Covid-19 Vaccine, which are meant to come from the Baltimore plant in the upcoming months. It will not say how long the delays could be.

Later on Wednesday, in a statement, the company said, “quality control process identified one batch of drug substance that did not meet quality standards at the Emergent BioSolutions facility.” They did not disclose the number of vaccine doses that were ruined. The company added, “This batch was never advanced to the filling and finishing stages of our manufacturing process.”

Johnson & Johnson also said that the issue was addressed with Emergent BioSolutions and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The company has also said it will deploy additional experts to the plant to supervise manufacturing as it moves toward the facility’s emergency-use authorization.

The company said, “In coordination with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, these steps will enable us to safely deliver an additional 24 million single-shot vaccine doses through April.” The Covid-19 Vaccine has been credited with helping to speed up the vaccine drive.
