Ohio Health Officials Report 729 New Coronavirus Cases

Ohio Health Officials report 729 new coronavirus cases were reported between Sunday and Monday, below the 21-day average of 1,234. There have been 1,091,623 total cases since the pandemic entered the state last year. The number of deaths on Monday remained unchanged since the last fatality report sent by the federal government on Friday, in which 19,528 Ohio residents had died.

Totally 14,011 vaccines were started between Sunday and Monday mornings, bringing the total to 4,995,275 or 42.74% of Ohio’s total population has at least begun the vaccine. Nearly 12,298 vaccines have been completed, which includes the single-dose Johnson & Johnson shot, and 37.54% of Ohio’s total population has completed the vaccine.Akron City Council voted on Monday to lift its mandate requiring masks in public places. The ordinance’s repeal takes effect immediately. The move is following new COVID-19 recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control. The Ohio Health Officials updated its health orders to reflect the changes on Monday.

Ellen Lander Nischt, city of Akron press secretary and senior strategic counsel in a news release said that they implore all Akron residents to continue to respect the rules that our local businesses establish and to make responsible decisions based on their vaccination status.

Lander also added that the increase in vaccination has reduced the risk of uncontrolled community spread and will provide protection to those individuals who have accessed the vaccine. It is highly recommended that those who have not been vaccinated continue to wear face-covering and practice social distancing since they are at a much higher risk for contracting and transmitting COVID-19.The city of Akron said this should not discourage businesses from establishing their own rules to maintain the health and safety of their workers.
